With just four games left to wind down the 2022 Nile Special Rugby Premier League season, only five points separate table toppers Heathens (68 points) and second placed Stanbic Black Pirates (63 points).
Third placed Kobs who are the defending champions have 61 points on the 10-team table but that’s not the topic here.
Pirates host Heathens today, Saturday 2nd April at Kings Park, Bweyogerere, a top of the table matchday 15 clash that will greatly decide this season’s champion.
Heathens are unbeaten this season and Pirates and Kobs are their greatest rivals but the Kyadondo based side came atop its two arch ‘enemies’ in the first round of the campaign.
Heathens will fancy winning the league unbeaten just like Kobs did last season but the former are being waylaid by the Sea Robbers with the league now in it’s final bend.
Heathens emerged 23-10 winners over Pirates in the first round clash in February at Kyadondo Rugby Club. The former has since then maintained a five point lead on the summit subjecting the Bweyogerere based outfit to a bride’s maid role for a while now.
A win for Heathens, with or without a maximum point will ensure that they consolidate the top spot going into the last three matches. Kobs could then move to second if they beat Rhinos at Legends Grounds in Kampala.
However, to tame Heathens’ title charge, Pirates must pick a win, even if it’s not with a bonus point and hope that next time the former meets Kobs, they drop points again.
However, with the title at their grasp, Heathens will most likely come out blazing with full cylinders and at worst collect a losing bonus point, but the ‘Yellow Machine’ is going for a kill and aim to leave Bweyogerere with a full bag.
Else where, bottom placed Warriors (8 points) who are facing relegation aim for redemption when they make a short trip to Kyadondo to play Buffaloes who are fifth with 29 points.
At the House of Payne in Entebbe, struggling Mongers (seventh with 24 points) will aim to make a statement against Impis (ninth with 12 points) who only got their first win of the season the previous weekend.
Rams who have massively improved this season make the longest trip of the weekend as they travel to Jinja to face Hippos at Dam Waters. Rams are sixth on the table with 27 points while Hippos are fourth with 34 points.
