Premier League 2023/24 Title Race: Will SC Villa, BUL, Vipers, or Kitara Triumph?

The 2023/24 StarTimes Uganda Premier League reaches its climax this Saturday with seven matches scheduled, but the spotlight will be on the key fixtures that could determine the league champions.

SC Villa enters the final matchday as the league leaders with 54 points. A victory will secure them their first title in 20 years. They face 6th placed NEC, a team making their premier league debut but proving to be formidable, especially at the MTN Omondi Stadium in Lugogo.

SC Villa’s coach, Dusan Stojanovic, will be counting on standout performances from key players such as Kenneth Ssemakula, Ronald Ssekiganda, Umar Lutalo, and Patrick Kakande. However, they face a tough challenge against NEC, coached by former SC Villa striker Hussein Mbalangu, who won the league with Villa in the early 2000s.

Second-placed BUL, with 53 points, clash with local rivals Busoga United at the Fufa Technical Centre in Njeru. Abbey Kikomeko’s squad must secure a win and hope SC Villa slips up to claim their first-ever league title. A draw could suffice for BUL if SC Villa loses and Vipers fail to secure a win against Mbarara City. BUL and Vipers are both on 53 points, but BUL has the edge with a superior head-to-head record.

Kitara, sitting in fourth with 51 points, will host Gaddafi, who are fighting relegation. Kitara must win and rely on all the teams above them to drop points to have a shot at the title.

In other fixtures, KCCA will visit Maroons at the Luzira Prisons Grounds, Wakiso Giants will face relegation-bound UPDF at Kabaka Kyabaggu Stadium, while URA takes on Soltilo Bright Stars at Mutesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku.
