The 2026 USSSA National Boys Football Championship has officially burst into life in Lira City, igniting excitement, competition, and dreams of glory as schools from across Uganda battle for national supremacy.
The championship was officially opened on Wednesday afternoon at the packed Lira Town College Stadium by the State Minister for Primary Education, Dr. Joyce Moriku Kaducu, who applauded the role of school sports in nurturing Uganda’s next generation of talent and leaders.
The opening fixture delivered immediate excitement as hosts Lira Town College thrilled home supporters with a commanding 2-0 victory over PP Newton on a rain-soaked and slippery surface, setting the tone for what has already become a fiercely competitive tournament.
Now, attention shifts to the decisive final round of group stage matches taking place today, Thursday, 14th May 2026, where schools will battle for qualification to the Round of 32. With knockout places hanging in the balance, every goal, tackle, and point matters as teams fight to keep their championship dreams alive.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, Dr. Kaducu praised Lira City for successfully hosting the prestigious competition and urged all participants to embrace discipline, sportsmanship, and fair play throughout the championship.
“I would like to congratulate Lira City for hosting these games. I also want to thank the Ministry of Education and Sports for supporting school sports and sports in general. I call upon teachers to help these young students nurture and develop their talents. I officially declare these games open,” she remarked.
Assistant Commissioner for Physical Education and Sports, Sammy Odong, emphasized the need for increased support toward Ugandan school teams representing the country internationally.
“I congratulate Lira Town College for hosting these games. I humbly appeal to the Government to adjust the budget so that we can fully support all Ugandan teams representing the country at the international level,” Odong noted.
USSSA President Justus Mugisha highlighted the tournament’s progressive structure, explaining that all participating teams will continue playing matches even after the group stages through mandatory classification games designed to maximize player development and exposure.
He also revealed that the championship goes beyond football competition, incorporating capacity-building initiatives where students are being trained as referees, coaches, and media officers — a move aimed at shaping the future of sports management in Uganda.
“This championship is not only about determining winners but also about developing players and building future professionals in sports. Uganda is now ranked as the second most organized country in Africa in school sports and second globally behind China,” Mugisha stated.
The stakes remain incredibly high, with the top three schools set to join Bukedea Comprehensive School in representing Uganda at the FEASSA Games scheduled for Tanzania from 12th to 22nd August 2026.
For hosts Lira Town College, the tournament represents a historic milestone. Headteacher Mr. Levi Abongo described the event as a proud moment for the institution and the entire city.
“This is the first time such a championship has been hosted at this school. We are committed to ensuring hospitality, welfare, and security for all participants. We call upon the people of Lira to come out in large numbers and support these students,” he said.
As the group stage action concludes today, anticipation continues to build ahead of the knockout rounds, where only the strongest teams will survive the race toward the grand finale on 20th May 2026.
