Just like men’s rugby, women’s competitions too will return in March this year as Uganda Rugby Union (URU) seeks to roll out its competitions calendar.

This will be the first time competitive rugby is played ever since sports activities were halted in March last year as a Covid-19 preventive measure by government.

According to URU’s missive in regard to the return of women’s competitions, the women’s regional 10 aside events will be played starting March this year and later the national team will be selected using the same tournaments.

“Women’s 10s RTP competition will be played in satellite tournaments in the regions with each region holding at least two but not more than three tournaments between 6th March and 1st April,” a URU missive read.

“The women will have a national finals tournament at the conclusion of the regionals,” another part of the missive read.

The one day 10 aside regional tournaments will involve women’s teams from Northern, Central and Eastern regions.

According to the women’s representative in the URU Executive Committee, Regina Lunyolo, 10s is one of the quickest formats to swing back into play.

“Because of the requirements to test for Covid-19 and adhere to SOPs, this is the most manageable way to return to play,” Lunyolo said.

After the circuits, a franchise team for women will assemble in Kampala to enable national team selectors pick players for future engagements.
