The rugby fraternity in Uganda and across Africa have come out to mourn Robert Seguya, a former national team player coach who died on Tuesday evening after succumbing to Leukaemia.
The terrible news of Seguya’s death was confirmed by local rugby governing body, Uganda Rugby Union through their social media handles.
“Uganda Rugby mourns the loss of legendary player and Coach Robert Seguya. May his soul Rest In Peace. #RIPRobertSseguya,” Uganda Rugby Union (URU) said via a missive.
Also refered to as Soggy in rugby circles, Seguya who was 43 was diagnosed with cancer in May this year after experiencing discomfort after his side’s (Jinja Hippos) league game against Mongers in Jinja.
Local clubs and players plus rugby governing bodies and individuals across the borders and all those that knew him have expressed their condolences to the grieving family and the rugby fraternity in Uganda.
Robert Seguya’s achievements as a player include;
*Selected for Africa Leopards twice in 2007 and 2008 being made captain on the first call
*Won the Elgon Cup in 2006
*African Champion in 2002 and 2007
*Won the league with Heathens in 2002, 2004, 2009, 2010, 2011
*Won the Uganda Cup with Heathens 2010, 2009, 2007, 2005, 2004, 2002, 2001
*Played for Uganda in 7s at the Commonwealth Games in 2006 and 2010
*Played for Uganda in the IRB Sevens circuit in 2001, 2003, 2004.
