Dr Donald Rukare has taken office as the first Commonwealth Sport (CS) President from the Africa region, stepping into the role at a crucial moment for the Movement.
With anticipation rising ahead of the high-profile Glasgow 2026 Games and the landmark Centenary edition in Amdavad, India, in 2030, Rukare’s election signals a new era defined by athlete-centred leadership and strategic transformation.
A seasoned figure across sport, diplomacy, and governance, Rukare brings more than 30 years of experience, having served as a World Aquatics Bureau Member, Vice President of Africa Aquatics, President of Commonwealth Games Uganda, and most recently, Interim President of CS.
His election by 74 member nations and territories reflects broad confidence in his vision for a united and forward-looking Movement.
In his manifesto, Rukare committed to placing athletes “at the heart of Commonwealth Sport” while advancing the organisation’s ‘Games Reset’—a framework aimed at enabling more diverse nations to host the Games sustainably.
His roadmap prioritises strengthening support for member Commonwealth Games Associations, scaling inclusive pathways through programmes such as GAPS, and fostering young leaders with initiatives like eqUIP. He also highlighted the importance of building global partnerships and engaging new generations of fans.
“I am deeply honoured by the trust placed in me by our Commonwealth Sport family,” Rukare said, pledging to lead “with integrity, passion and transparency.” He emphasised momentum heading into Glasgow 2026, the Malta 2027 Commonwealth Youth Games, and the 2030 Centenary Games in India. “Our athletes deserve every opportunity to shine, and I am committed to ensuring that Commonwealth Sport remains athlete-centred and a force for unity, excellence, and impact across all our regions,” he added.
Commonwealth Sport CEO Katie Sadleir welcomed his election, praising his “bold and collaborative leadership” at a transformative moment for the Movement. She noted that his commitment to sustainable development and shared values aligns with the organisation’s Commonwealth United Strategic Plan. “We look forward to continuing to work together to evolve the Movement, support athletes, and thrill fans,” Sadleir said.
