Uganda national U17 football side (Uganda Cubs) endured a tough welcome to the big stage when they fell to Angola 1-0 in a group A opening fixture played on Sunday at the National stadium, Dar es Salam in Tanzania.

The Cubs, who were making a debut at the Afcon U17 finals, conceded as early as 33rd minute through Pedro Capemba Osvaldo. The Fabien Paa Kwesi’s side pushed hard for an equaliser and their best chance came in the 80th when substitute Isma Mugulusi’s low short hit post and Najib Yiga arrived late for the rebound. For the worst, Ibrahim Juma was sent off three minutes to time and Cubs will miss the left back as they face hosts Tanzania on Wednesday in their next fixture.

In the official opening game, Nigeria were 5-4 winners over hosts Tanzania. The top two teams from each of the two groups will represent Africa at the FIFA U17 World Cup in Brazil later this year.

Uganda Cubs XI: Jack Komakech (G.K), Samson Kasozi, Ibrahim Juma, Gavin Kizito Mugweri (Captain), Davis Ssekajja, Andrew Kawooya, Idd Abdulwahid, Ivan Asaba, Yiga Najib, Rogers Mugisha, Justine Opiro

Subs: Patrick Mubiru, Kevin Ssekimbegga, Innocent Opira, Isma Mugulusi, Thomas Kakaire, Mukisa Opaala, Polycarp Mwaka, John Alou, James Jarieko
