Uganda Sevens Head Coach Tolbert Onyango has named a 14-player squad which will travel for the final phase of Uganda’s training camp in Stellenbosch, South Africa ahead of the 2023 World Rugby Challenger Series scheduled for April.
Team Uganda has three new faces who could make their national team debuts if they are picked in the final 12-man team with one slot already guaranteed for any of the trio, but only if the coach doesn’t make new call-ups outside the South Africa bound contingent.
The three players are; Yasin Waiswa (Jinja Hippos), William Lukwago (Mongers) and Allan Olango (Rhinos).
However, veterans Michael Wokorach and France based Philip Wokorach who are the most capped Uganda Sevens players are not in the final training team.
19 players were in the initial training camp which had been happening locally for around a month.
The World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series 2023 was recently confirmed with two three-day tournaments including the women and men and will take place at Markotter Stadium in Stellenbosch, South Africa from 20-22 and 28-30 April 2023.
The Challenger Series provides a promotion pathway to the new Sevens World Series from the end of 2023 (with the new host venues still to be confirmed) in a new format.
