Uganda Cranes’ local core: Villa, Vipers, KCCA lead home-based players heading to AFCON 2025

Uganda Cranes head coach Paul Put yesterday released his final 27-man squad for the TotalEnergies AFCON 2025 finals, and among the names are several home-based players whose strong league performances have pushed them onto Africa’s biggest stage.

While the squad includes familiar faces from Europe, Asia, and across the continent, Put’s final list retains a significant local backbone—proof that the Uganda Premier League continues to produce top-tier talent ready to compete with the best.

KCCA, Vipers, Villa Lead Uganda’s Representation
KCCA FC and Vipers SC remain crucial talent pipelines, each supplying multiple players to the continental campaign. At Lugogo, goalkeeper Charles Lukwago returns to the national setup, joined by forwards Ivan Ahimbisibwe and Shafik Nana Kwikiriza, both earning well-deserved call-ups following standout domestic performances.

Vipers SC’s consistency under the spotlight continues, with defender Rogers Torach and centre-back Hilary Mukundane making the final cut. Attacker Allan Okello, a fan favourite and one of the league’s most creative sparks, also secures his ticket to Morocco.

SC Villa, fresh off impressive league campaigns, sees two of its own break into the final squad. Defender David Owori and forward Reagan Mpande will carry the Jogoo flag into the tournament, reinforcing Villa’s return to elite player development.

Further down the local ladder, Masaka Sunshine FC’s prolific forward James Bogere earns one of the most inspiring call-ups—proof that exceptional talent can shine from any corner of Ugandan football.

A Homegrown Core with Big Responsibilities
With AFCON 2025 promising one of the most competitive fields yet, Uganda’s local contingent enters camp not as squad fillers, but as key contributors. Their inclusion comes at a time when domestic football is regaining its competitiveness and fan energy.

Put has consistently praised the hunger and commitment shown by Uganda-based players, and their presence offers both tactical balance and a relatable story for fans back home.

The team departs Entebbe Airport on Sunday, 7 December 2025 at 5:30 pm aboard Qatar Airways, heading to Casablanca for an 11-day camp that will include two trial matches.
