Following a historic 2-0 victory over Niger at the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, Uganda Cranes goalkeeper Joel Mutakubwa has called on his teammates to shift their focus to the final Group C match against South Africa.
The Cranes’ composed performance at the Nelson Mandela Stadium on Monday night saw them climb to the top of Group C, marking their first-ever back-to-back wins in CHAN history. The result puts Uganda within striking distance of a coveted quarter-final spot.
Allan Okello, who had his initial penalty saved, made no mistake on the rebound to break the deadlock midway through the first half. Minutes later, Joel Sserunjogi sealed the result with a confident finish. Mutakubwa’s crucial saves throughout the match earned him the man of the match award and ensured a clean sheet for the team.
“We thank God for this moment. It’s something I’ve worked hard for,” said a proud Mutakubwa. “Most importantly, we earned the three points. After losing to Algeria in the first game, we treated every match like a final—and the one against South Africa will be no different.”
Okello echoed the sentiment, admitting that while the match wasn’t easy, the team’s preparation made the difference.
“I was nervous when I stepped up for the penalty, and when it didn’t go in, I just stayed alert and made the rebound count,” said Okello. “Now our focus is on finishing strong against South Africa.”
Unfortunately, the team will be without Joel Sserunjogi in the next fixture due to suspension after collecting two yellow cards. Still, he remains confident in his teammates.
“I would love to be out there, but I trust the squad. Whoever steps in will do the job,” Sserunjogi affirmed.
Midfielder Patrick Kakande emphasized the collective spirit within the camp.
“For us, it’s always about the team. We’re all working toward the same goal, and we want to complete the mission against South Africa.”
Uganda’s final Group C clash with South Africa will be pivotal. A win or draw could secure their place in the knockout rounds—an achievement that would mark a major milestone in Cranes’ CHAN history.
