The stage is set for a thrilling clash as Uganda’s U17 Boys National Team, the Uganda Cubs, take on Tanzania in the CECAFA U17 Championship final.
The much-anticipated match kicks off today at 3:30 PM at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, with both teams vying for regional supremacy ahead of the U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Cubs secured their spot in the final with a commanding 4-1 victory over Somalia in the semifinal, showcasing their dominance throughout the tournament. Coach Brian Ssenyondo’s side has been in scintillating form, scoring 10 goals in just three games.
The semifinal win not only booked Uganda’s place in the final but also earned them a ticket to the U17 AFCON, set for Morocco from March 30 to April 19, 2025.
Meanwhile, Tanzania has also impressed, cruising past South Sudan with a 4-0 semifinal victory. Both teams have already qualified for the U17 AFCON, but the CECAFA title remains a prestigious prize and a key morale booster ahead of the continental competition.
Speaking ahead of the final, Coach Ssenyondo expressed confidence in his team’s preparation and readiness to face their tough opponents.
“We’ve already achieved part of our dream of qualifying for AFCON, so we have no much pressure. Tanzania is a tough opponent, but we are prepared to give our best and fight for the title,” he said.
Uganda will rely on star players like James Bogere, who has already netted two hat-tricks in the tournament, and captain Richard Okello, whose leadership has been instrumental despite nursing a minor injury earlier in the competition.
The Cubs held their final training session at MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo, with high hopes of securing a historic victory that would reaffirm Uganda’s dominance in regional youth football. A win today would also reclaim the CECAFA title from Somalia, the champions of the previous edition.
