Uganda Golf Open: Cwinyai-ai Starts On Good Note
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Tournament: Tusker Malt Uganda Open Golf Championship 2020

Duration: 26th November  – 6th December 2020.

Venue: Uganda Golf Club, Kitante

Ongoing Event:
*Amateur Gross: 1st to 4th December 2020

Uganda national Amateur team Captain Joseph Cwinyai-ai has started the Tusker Malt Uganda Open Golf Championship 2020 on a good note after he emerged joint day one leader when amateur gross players teed off on Tuesday at Uganda Golf Club’s par-72 course in Kitante.

Cwinyai-ai, handicap +2 struck a joint gross score of 73 with Gaita Rodell to set up himself  for a maiden championship with the four-day event set to wind down on Friday.

The Toro Golf Club star hit 36 on the front nine before managing 37 on the back nine to claim a one over par.

“I feel happy about today and I hope I get better in each round of play. The sunny weather has favored us today because initially we were scared of the recent rains,” Cwinyai-ai said after his round.

However, Cwinyai-ai is wary of ‘day one leader curse’ that has seen many players phase out in the final round after a promising start. It’s a situation we saw play out in the recently concluded ladies open when Peace Kabasweka threw away a two-day lead to gift Martha Babirye a chance to defend the title.

However, Asaba Denis, handicap +2 was another Ugandan top performer in the opening round with a gross score of 75, emerging joint second with John Legirma.
The Amateur event is the oldest category of the championship and it will mark its 79th edition this year.

The tournament sponsors are; Tusker Malt Lager (main sponsor), Next Media, Master Power Systems, Stanbic Bank, Pinnacle Security, Crown Berger, Crown Beverages, Robert Ojara Education Foundation and Case Medcare.

Day One Leaderboard:
T1. Joseph Cwinyai-ai – 73 Gross
Gaita Rodell -73
T3. Danis Asaba – 75
John Legirma – 75
