Uganda XI produced a spirited performance but ultimately fell agonizingly short as SoBo Mumbai Falcons secured a tense one-wicket victory in the opening T20 match of Uganda’s Mumbai Tour at Dadoji Konddev Stadium on Tuesday.
Defending a modest total of 112 on a challenging surface, the Cricket Cranes pushed the experienced Mumbai franchise side to the final over before Falcons captain Akash Parkar held his nerve to steer the hosts to 118 for nine in 19.1 overs.
Despite the defeat ending Uganda’s unbeaten run on tour, the visitors earned widespread praise for their resilience and competitiveness against a side packed with seasoned domestic Indian cricketers.
Uganda’s innings got off to a disastrous start after the Falcons won the toss and elected to field under favorable morning bowling conditions.
Openers Simon Ssesazi and Sarvesh Patil departed early, leaving Uganda struggling at 10 for two inside the opening two overs as the Mumbai seamers exploited movement and uneven bounce.
With the innings threatening to unravel, Gerald Olipa counterattacked brilliantly to revive Uganda’s hopes.
The former Uganda U-19 captain smashed a fearless 52 off just 30 balls, striking eight boundaries and one six in an innings that combined composure with calculated aggression. His knock temporarily swung momentum back in Uganda’s favor as he punished both pace and spin with fluent strokeplay.
Ronald Lutaaya contributed 17, but Uganda’s middle order failed to build lasting partnerships as the visitors were bowled out for 112 in 17.2 overs.
Falcons spinner Kavya Gori starred with the ball, claiming three wickets for 12 runs, while Siddharth Jayesh Raut and Nikhil Giri picked up two wickets each.
Reflecting on his innings, Olipa admitted the conditions made batting difficult.
“Our batsmen collapsed pretty quickly and we didn’t get the runs we desired. I came in and tried to score for my team and get a score we could defend, but the wicket was very tough to bat on,” Olipa said.
Although the target appeared modest, Uganda’s bowlers transformed the chase into a gripping contest.
The Falcons initially looked comfortable at 68 for four, with Gautam Wagehla blasting 31 off 16 balls and wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Mulchandani adding a quickfire 10.
However, Uganda’s disciplined bowling attack clawed the match back dramatically.
Henry Ssenyondo delivered an outstanding spell of two for 13 in four overs, while Juma Miyaji, Cosmas Kyewuta, and Joseph Baguma all claimed two wickets apiece as panic spread through the Falcons batting lineup.
The hosts collapsed from 78 for four to 98 for nine, raising hopes of a famous Uganda victory before Parkar’s experience proved decisive.
The Falcons captain remained unbeaten on 36 off 40 balls, calmly guiding his side home with five balls remaining.
Uganda believed they had dismissed Parkar earlier in the innings when an appeal for a catch behind was turned down — a moment that ultimately proved crucial.
“We also put him down and he was lucky with one particular decision when we all felt we had him caught behind,” Olipa said.
Uganda head coach Steve Tikolo pointed to dropped catches as the key factor behind the narrow defeat.
“We put down two catches. The second one would have won us the match. Catches win matches,” Tikolo said.
Captain Fred Achelam, however, praised the determination shown by his side against high-quality opposition.
“It wasn’t an easy game for either side. Despite us losing, I am happy the guys fought to the very end against some good players who have also earned stripes in the Ranji Trophy,” Achelam said.
Uganda rested senior all-rounders Alpesh Ramjani and Dinesh Nakrani for the match, allowing younger players valuable experience ahead of upcoming ICC tournaments later this year.
The performance also highlighted the growing depth within the Cricket Cranes setup, with emerging talents such as Olipa continuing to impress on the international stage.
Uganda will now seek to level the T20 series when they face MCA Colts XI in the second match on Wednesday at Adani Stadium in Dahanu, Maharashtra.
