Uganda’s Ronald Rugumayo has maintained his lead after two rounds of the professional event of the 2023 Johnnie Walker Uganda Open Golf Championship currently going on at Uganda Golf Club (UGC) in Kampala.

Rugumayo who shot 5 under par 67 in the opening round and led (then) by two shots now has an overall 8 under par 136 after he posted 3 under par 69 on day two at UGC’s par-72 course. He still tops the leaderboard but now with only one stroke ahead of Rwanda’s Celestin Nsanzuwera.

Uganda’s David Kamulindwa is third after day two with a gross score of 138. Zambia’s Paulino Kasoma and Kenya’s Njoroge Kibugu are tied for fourth with a gross score of 139.

While there were many standout performances on the day (Thursday), it was Rugumayo who managed to hold on to the lead, finishing the day ahead of the pack by just one stroke.

Rugumayo, a member of Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spa recently pitched camp in South Africa, something that has seen his game improve. His steady and consistent play has seen him take and retain the lead ahead of the final two days of the tournament.

On Thursday (day two), he managed five birdies in hole 1, 3, 5, 8 and 13. He only had two bogeys and the rest were pars. He had a bogey-free round in the opening day (Wednesday), with five birdies.

Despite some slight pressure from his closest competitors, Rugumayo who is in pursuit for a maiden Uganda Open professional title has so far managed to stay calm and focused, hitting his shots with precision and accuracy.

With the final day of the tournament slated for tomorrow, Rugumayo will be looking to hold on to his lead and secure the championship title. However, with some of the region’s best golfers right on his heels, the competition is sure to be intense.

However, it’s hard to predict the champion of this year’s professional event as it’s only six strokes separating Rugumayo from the four players tied for 10th.

However, the top 10 positions on the leaderboard are dominated by Ugandans (five) while Kenyans are four.
