As the 2020 Olympic games in Japan edge closer, team Uganda is facing a serious issue with COVID-19.
After a coach tested positive for the virus, it has been confirmed that another member has also been found with COVID-19.
This was communicated to the media on Wednesday, June 23, through a press statement signed by Uganda Olympic Committee Secretary General Beatrice Ayikoru.
“Today we have learnt that a second member of our Team Uganda has tested positive for Covid-19. The member is asymptomatic and being looked after by the health authorities in Izumisano city. The rest of the team is well and continue to acclimatize in Izumisano. We remain firmly committed and focused on ensuring the safety and wellness of our team and working together with all relevant authorities.”
Nine individuals including five athletes left Uganda for Japan last week in a bid to make early preparations for the games.
One tested positive upon arrival despite the National Council of Sports insisting that they carried two tests prior to the team’s departure.
It is yet to be known whether the second positive case is that of an athlete or the support staff.
