Uganda’s basketball legend Omony goes missing

Uganda’s basketball legend Steven Omony has reportedly been missing for the past four months. His whereabouts are still unknown even to his own family with the matter of disappearance only gaining media attention just recently.

“What you may not know is that he vanished from home months ago, and his family hasn’t seen or heard from him since. We have been searching low key of course, last week we involved the security people but today it went public,” one of the missives forwarded to one of the basketball WhatsApp groups read.

Some of those who have known Omony for a long time say that he never asks for help even at his worst and has sometimes resorted to disappearing until issues calm down. However, this doesn’t stop his family and friends to be worried and continue to look out for him.

Omony, 41 last played competitive basketball around 2019. In 2020 while at City Oilers, he underwent knee surgery but didn’t return active basketball even after healing, he went on to do other things.

Omony is known for leading the national side, Silverbacks to the its first AfroBasket in 2015 in Tunisia, the side managed one win from the continental meet (against Zimbabwe).

He played for local sides City Oilers and Falcons winning two and one titles respectively. He also played for Blue Jackets as well as Seychelles outfit PLS Hawks.
