URU Reveals Date For Return Of Rugby

Local rugby governing body Uganda Rugby Union (URU) has revealed the return date for competitive play as it seeks to roll out the competitions calendar.

According to URU’s social media missive, the competitions calendar will officially kickoff on Saturday, 6th March 2021 with the return of the men’s National Rugby Premier League.

“We had a chairmen’s round table discussion and they agreed to return to play on 6th March 2021.
The league will be in a single round robin format with 10 teams participating,” a URU notice read in regard to the matter.

The union is also working on how to reinstate women’s competitive activities with the Lady Rugby Cranes having some continental action coming up.

After the premature cancellation of the Rugby Premier League in September last year, Heathens emerged champions of the 2019/20 season off 63 points, five ahead of second placed Kobs though with five games unplayed by all teams.

Heathens who retained the title and claimed a record 15th championship last season officially received their trophy in December last year at Kyadondo Rugby Club in a function attended by players, Uganda Rugby Union (URU) officials and league sponsors Nile Special Stout.

The 10 teams that will participate in the upcoming league are; Heathens, Kobs, Pirates, Buffaloes, Warriors, Rams, Hippos, Rhinos, Mongers and Impis.
