Today, Wednesday, March 13th, the Uganda women’s national cricket team, known as Victoria Pearls, is poised to compete for the bronze medal against Nigeria’s Female Yellow Greens at the African Games. Their aspirations for gold were dashed earlier this week in Accra when they encountered a formidable South African team.
Captain Nondumiso Shangase and Kayla Reyneke shone in South Africa’s 50-run win against Uganda in the women’s T20 cricket semi-final. South Africa posted 122/4 in their 20 overs, with player of the match Shangase contributing a 42-ball 38 and Miane Smit adding 20 off 16 balls.
Defending their total, Reyneke’s brilliant bowling performance of three for 13 played a crucial role in restricting Uganda to 72 all-out, securing the result with eight balls to spare.
Despite the setback, Victoria Pearls are still in the medal bracket and will come up against a Nigerian side that fell to Zimbabwe’s Lady Chevrons in the other semifinal. Nigeria lost by five wickets on Monday after going shoulder-to-shoulder against test nation Zimbabwe (74/9 in 20.0 overs against 75/5 in 16.0 overs).
Victoria Pearls’ Vice Captain, Janet Mbabazi, emphasized the team’s commitment to learning from their experience in Monday’s game. She highlighted that they have identified areas for improvement and are determined to rectify any mistakes in the upcoming third-place playoff match. Mbabazi stressed the importance of applying these lessons to their gameplay, ensuring a stronger performance as they strive for a podium finish in the tournament.
“The South Africans are really skilled; they’re hitting the right lines with the ball and playing aggressively. I hope it’s something we can apply in our upcoming game,” Mbabazi said ahead of the third-place playoff.
“Against Nigeria, we will focus on executing our game plan and sticking to the basics, especially when batting. We need to maintain partnerships and follow our process in both batting and bowling. Most importantly, we aim to enjoy ourselves during the game,” she added.
Securing a podium finish in Accra would not only be a significant achievement for the Victoria Pearls but also serve as a morale boost ahead of the global qualifiers in Dubai next month. This upcoming opportunity presents a pivotal moment for the team as they aim to secure a spot in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup for the first time in their history. A successful performance in Accra will not only demonstrate their capabilities on the international stage but also instill confidence and momentum as they prepare to compete against top teams from around the world in Dubai.
