Vipers SC concluded the first round of the Uganda Premier League (UPL) in commanding fashion, edging Maroons 1-0 at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, on Monday.
Moses Waiswa’s 18th-minute goal, assisted by Allan Okello, proved decisive, securing all three points for the home side.
With 10 wins, four draws, and a single defeat, Vipers sit at the summit with 34 points, maintaining a four-point lead over NEC FC.
However, NEC could reduce the gap to just one point if they overcome Mbale Heroes in Tuesday’s clash.
The match’s only goal highlighted Waiswa’s clinical finishing and earned Maroons’ goalkeeper Simon Tamale the Man of the Match accolade for his valiant effort between the posts. Despite the loss, Maroons remain fifth with 22 points, though Tuesday’s matches could alter their standing.
Earlier on Monday, Express FC secured a 2-0 victory over UPDF FC in Bombo. Second-half goals from Conrad Ssenjogera and Sam Ssenyonjo, the latter from the penalty spot, ensured Express remained in contention for a top-three finish.
The win moved the Red Eagles to third place with 25 points. However, KCCA FC, currently in fourth with 24 points, could reclaim the position with a victory against Mbarara City FC on Tuesday.
Elsewhere, Soltilo Bright Stars and Lugazi FC played out a 1-1 draw at Kavumba. Alex Mandera’s 63rd-minute strike canceled out Nelson Mandela’s first-half goal, as both teams shared the spoils.
The result leaves Bright Stars in 15th place with 10 points, while Lugazi sit just above the relegation zone with 14 points.
The league will take a brief break to allow preparations for the CHAN 2024 tournament, which runs from February 1 to 28 and will be co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.
Matchday 15 concludes on Tuesday with five games scheduled, including NEC FC’s crucial encounter with Mbale Heroes and URA FC’s clash with Police FC.
