Arua-based West Nile Golf Club was on Saturday crowned overall winner of the 2019 Uganda Golf Tours after the grand finale at Uganda Golf Club (UGC), Kitante.

After nine tour events across various clubs in the country, West Nile Club bagged a team high 299 points to claim top honors. Entebe Club emerged second with 217 points while Namulonge – The Mary Louis Simkins Memorial Golf Club was third with 162 points. “The belief that golf is for the rich is not true. It is about how organized you are and our win tells it all. We are now looking towards the future,” West Nile Club General Secretary Gayo William Draku told the media. He attributed the victory to early preparations and consistent training.

West Nile Club was resurrected in 2018 after 8 years of inactivity and the tours triumph is a clear testimony of their intent to put up strong competition.

Draku said that West Nile’s win opens a new chapter for golf in Arua as well as the entire West Nile and Northern region.

UGC Lady Captain Anne Abeja emerged Ladies overall winner at the grand finale tour with 70 nett while Palm Valley Adochi Luwum was men’s overall winner with 64 nett.

The Uganda Golf Open tour was initiated by Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) to promote golf tourism and was officially launched on 30th March at Lake Victoria Serena Kigo.

The tours ran from 6th April – 17th August 2019 traversing almost the entire country. Mbale Sports Club, Toro Club, Mehta Golf Club – Lugazi, Jinja Club, Arua (West Nile) Club, Mbarara Club, Namulonge, Entebbe and Uganda Golf Club hosted the action across the country.

After the tours, all eyes are set on the Castle Lite Uganda Golf Open Championship that will tip off on 27th August until Mid September at Lake Victoria Serena Golf Course.
