A 14-seater taxi carrying Jinja-based players of women’s rugby outfit Black Pearls was on Saturday involved in a road accident with the lead car of the convoy of the Vice President Jessica Alupo at Mabira Forest.
The players were heading to Kampala for their Women’s XV’s fixture against Avengers, a game initially scheduled for 12 PM at Legends Grounds in Kampala. On hearing the sad news, the fixture which was a top-of-the-table clash was immediately postponed by Uganda Rugby Union (URU).
“We are saddened to hear that Black Pearls players have been involved in an accident…their game is postponed to a layer date as we continue to pray for their speedy recovery,” URU said via a social media missive.
No casualties were registered and some of the injured players were rushed to Lugazi Hospital.
Police officers on Alupo’s lead patrol car also sustained injuries. According to reports, the VP’s other vehicles including the one carrying her didn’t stop at the scene.
