Uganda Rugby Cranes Sevens will play in the men’s Group B of World Rugby Sevens Repechage tournament which will take place on 19-20 June, 2021 in Monaco at the Stade Louis II.

The countries seeded together with Uganda are; France, Hong Kong, Chile and Jamaica.

On Tuesday, 11 May, 2021, Monaco hosted the draw to decide the pools for the men’s and women’s competitions at the World Rugby Sevens Repechage, the final qualification event for the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

The draw was held at the Hotel Hermitage, Monaco in the presence of His Serene Highness Prince Albert II.

The final qualification tournament in Monaco will feature 12 women’s and 10 men’s teams. The teams represent each of World Rugby’s six regions and this tournament is their final chance to qualify for the Olympics.

The other men’s Group (A) has Samoa, Ireland, Tonga, Zimbabwe and Mexico.

There are three women’s groups with Group A comprising of Russia, Argentina, Mexico and Samoa.

Women’s Group B has Papua New Guinea, Kazakhstan, Jamaica and Tunisia while Group C has Hong Kong, France, Colombia and Madagascar.

With 21 of the 24 teams already qualified for the Olympic rugby sevens competition, the remaining two women’s and one men’s steams to participate at the Olympic Games in Tokyo will be determined at the Repechage event.

The top two teams in each pool, plus the two third-placed teams with the highest point totals will qualify for the knockout stages of the competition. As there are two Olympic qualification places available for women, the Repechage will feature two rounds of knockout games with the final round featuring four teams competing in two matches where both winners gain Olympic qualification and claim their tickets to Tokyo.

The Olympic men’s rugby sevens competition will take place from 26-28 July, with the women’s tournament following on 29-31 July. All the action will take place at Tokyo Stadium, which was a venue for Rugby World Cup 2019.

Rugby sevens is expected to be one of the most highly anticipated events of the Tokyo Games, following the outstanding success of Rugby World Cup 2019 in Japan, which captured the nation’s imagination with record-breaking broadcast audiences and huge numbers of new rugby fans across Japan and Asia.

The inclusion of rugby sevens for the first time in the Olympic Games at Rio 2016 had a profound effect on the sport, attracting an estimated 30 million new fans globally.

Meanwhile, Uganda Rugby Cranes 7s team are currently participating in the Solidarity Camp organized by Rugby Africa in South Africa (Stellenbosch). Hosts, Blitzboks and SA Rugby Sevens Academy Kenya and Zimbabwe are the other teams in the event.
