Alternative headline: Fennec Foxes March Into AFCON Last-16 After Narrow Burkina Faso Win
Algeria booked their place in the last-16 of the Africa Cup of Nations with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Burkina Faso, continuing an impressive start to the tournament that underlined their strength as a collective rather than individual brilliance.
The Fennec Foxes maintained their perfect defensive record in Group E, recording a second successive clean sheet to move top of the table with six points from two matches. It was another disciplined and well-managed performance that highlighted Algeria’s balance between defensive solidity and controlled attacking play.
The match began at a lively pace, with both sides showing attacking intent, but Algeria gradually grew into the contest and began to dictate proceedings. Their pressure paid off midway through the first half when sustained attacking play forced a mistake in the Burkina Faso penalty area. Former Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez calmly converted the resulting spot kick in the 23rd minute, a goal that ultimately proved decisive.
After the break, the contest remained open and competitive, with Burkina Faso pushing to get back into the game. Algeria, however, remained composed, defending as a unit and limiting their opponents to few clear chances. The North Africans continued to threaten on the counter, coming close to extending their lead late on, but were unable to find a second goal.
The final stages saw Burkina Faso increase the pressure, yet Algeria’s defensive organisation stood firm. Their ability to close down space and restrict shots on target ensured the narrow lead was protected until the final whistle, sealing qualification for the knockout rounds with a game to spare.
Algeria will round off their Group E campaign against Equatorial Guinea on Wednesday, 31 December, looking to maintain their momentum and carry their strong team performances into the business end of the tournament.
