The new Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) Chairman, Michael Nuwagaba says that attaining One Day International (ODI) status for the national men’s side (Cricket Cranes) is one of the association’s five key objectives in his two-year tenure at the helm of the game.

Nuwagaba who succeeded Bashir Ansasira Badu as new Uganda Cricket Chairman last weekend says that his other objectives are; getting a permanent home for cricket, enhancing financial stability, maintaining unity that’s already there and professionalizing national teams.

“We have many things we plan to accomplish but attaining ODI status for the men’s national team is our main target. We just need to win in the tournaments that are coming up,” Nuwagaba said in a press briefing this week at Lugogo.

The 2021 Jersey Cricket World Cup Challenge League B scheduled for September is part of Cricket Cranes roadmap to ODI status and it also forms part of the qualifying pathway to the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 in India.

Nuwagaba says the association has what it takes to ensure that the team does well at the above event and the ones after that.

“Attaining ODI status is very realistic because we have already laid plans for it. I believe in the next two to three years, we shall be there. Already, we’re working with some partners who will steer the team into achieving it,” Nuwagaba added.

One Day International (ODI) is a form of limited overs cricket.

It is played between two teams with international status, in which each team faces a fixed number of overs, currently 50, with the game lasting up to 8 hours.

The Cricket World Cup, generally held every four years, is played in this format.

One Day International matches are also called Limited Overs Internationals (LOI), although this generic term may also refer to Twenty20 International matches.

They are major matches and considered the highest standard of List A, limited-overs competition.
