Aziz Damani Cricket Club have dedicated their UCA T20 Women’s Tournament title win to Consy Aweko, one of their players who lost her mother over a week ago.
Aziz Damani beat Soroti Cricket Academy Select XI by 8 runs (77/10 in 17.5 overs against 69/10) to win the UCA T20 Women’s Tournament during the finals of the showpiece on Sunday at the University Oval, Kyambogo.
Aziz Damani Coach Yusuf Nanga says that the win is dedicated to Aweko, a sign that everyone at the club is grieving with her.
“We dedicate this victory to Consy Aweko, one of our players who lost her mother over a week ago. We stand with her in this hard time and she should know that everyone in the club cares for and loves her,” Nanga said on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Aziz Damani who won the toss and elected to bat first had Veronica Abuga returning 23 runs off 35 balls whilst Racheal Ntono managed 15 runs off 13 balls. The two managed the highest runs in their innings.
For the young Soroti side, Esther Iloku with 21 runs off 33 balls and Christine Anayo with 11 runs off 7 balls were the top batters.
However, albeit Soroti’s resilience, Aziz Damani fielded precisely to ensure that they choke their rivals even when they had victory in sight.
The star bowlers for Damani in their victory were Anna Nyapendi who claimed 3 wickets for 12 runs in her 3 overs spell and Patricia Malemikia who opened the bowling and prized out 2 wickets for 5 runs in 4 overs to stifle the runs flow against Soroti.
Soroti as well did good in batting with Christine Anayo picking 3 wickets for 20 runs in 4 Overs with Sarah Akiteng managing 2 wickets for 8 runs in 4 overs, Achan Recheal had 2 wickets for 20 runs in 4 Overs.
After victory, Nanga says that they will capitalize on the result, to build on it ahead of future club engagements. He also says that the win means a lot to the side.
However, earlier in the day, Aziz Damani beat Pioneer CC by 115 runs (164/3 in 20 Overs against 49/10 in 15.5 overs) in the semifinal held at Lugogo Cricket Oval. Soroti beat Wanderers CC in the semifinal held at Kyambogo.
