Uganda Golf Club (UGC) handicap 4, female golfer Martha Bairye, 23 is the 2019 Castle Lite Uganda Open Golf Tournament – Ladies champion after topping the leader board with a total gross of 242 after three days of action at the Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spa, Kigo.

Babirye who also won the UGC Ladies Open last weekend returned a gross of 76 to claim a six-shot lead in day one with fellow Ugandan Irene Nakalembe (Entebbe Golf Club) emerging second at the 54-hole stroke-play competition.

On day two, Nakalembe reduced Bairye’s lead to just one shot (Babirye – 79, Nakalembe – 74) but Babirye could not squander the two-day lead just like she did last year.

Babirye becomes the second Ugandan to become overall winner since Flavia Namakula in 2016. Tanzania’s Eaton Howard Angel and Neema Olomi won in 2017 and 2018 respectively but this time, Olomi managed a total gross of 260 to finish 8th while Eaton finished third with a total gross of 245.

This year marks the 78th edition of the Uganda golf Open while the Ladies Open marked its 69th staging. Next is the Amateurs Open scheduled for September 4-7 and this is the main event of the open.
