Uganda Netball Federation ( UNF) President Sarah Babirye Kityo has on Wednesday, 17th May 2023 been granted a cash bail of UGX 1,000,000 after spending two nights at Luzira Prison.

Babirye was on Monday, April 15th 2023 remanded to Luzira Prison by Buganda Road Court for allegedly obtaining money by false pretence. This was after she was summoned by Uganda Police to record statements in her defence for the mentioned offence.

Babirye is jointly charged with a business woman Zainab Namutebi for offences committed in May 2022 in Kampala. The latter is also out on bail on the same bail amount with their sureties Dan Ntale and Dorothy Lwanga each commiting to a non-cash bond of Sh4m.

Grade One Magistrate Siena Owomugisha granted bail to the duo.

Going forward, the case comes up for hearing on June 6, 2023.

The current developments come less than a month after Babirye was told to step down from office for a spell of three months. The directive made last moth by the Minister of Education and Sports and First Lady Janet Kataha Museveni came after the netball leader was accused of financial mismanagement and harassment, among others.

For the recent incident, Babirye is facing charges of obtaining UGX 16 Million by falsely pretending to take people to United States.

Babirye’s accusers include a mother; Sarah Wamala who claims she paid here UGX 8 Million to take her son overseas and Gloria Kikomeko Nantambi who says she also paid Babirye UGX 8 Million to take her to the same destination.

Also, Uganda Boxing Federation ( UBF) President Moses Muhangi is still detained at Kampala Central Police station( CPS) over accountability queries.
