Handicap 4, female golfer Martha Babirye emerged overall winner of the second edition of the Uganda Golf Club (UGC) Ladies open after returning 149 gross over the weekend at the Kitante golf club.

The in-form Babirye also emerged as the Longest Drive Women winner at the two-day championship. She partly attributed her victory to helpful caddie Robert Ssenteza.

“I had a very good caddie and he really helped me a lot. I am very happy for the win and look forward for more victories,” noted Babirye, whose focus now shifts to the Uganda Golf Open championship that tips off with the ladies on 29th August at Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spa, Kigo.

Peace Kabasweka again emerged second like last year after returning 150 gross. She had 159 gross last year to settle for the same position. Inaugural winner Irene Nakalembe settled for third with 153 gross.

Nearest to the pin women was won by Loice Chingono. In the men’s subsidiary event played on Saturday, Nick Snyman won the longest drive award while Gaita Rodel claimed the nearest to the pin gong.

In Group A, Douglas Charles was winner with 40 points while Roger Byaruhanga was runner up with 34 points. In Group B, Bashir Badu emerged winner with 44 points and William Esuma was second with 40 points.

In Group C Michael Muhangi was winner with 38 points and Mark Nuhabwe was runner up with 40. Winners received various goodies including vouchers from sponsors before golfers danced to live old school music by Janzi Band.

UGC Lady Captain Anne Abeja lauded the sponsors for ensuring that they had a successful event. Tusker Malt Lager, Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) and NTV were the event main sponsors. Other sponsors were: Case Hospital, Life Care Wellness Spa, Gofan Safaris and Travel Africa, Expresso and Wendy Wines and Spirits.
