Barbarians edge Ba Musaayi Muto to win Ngo League season 5 title

Celestine Nasimolo was the hero as his first half double was enough to earn Barbarians a 2-0 win over Ba Musaayi Muto in the Guinness-powered grand finale of Season 5 of the Ngo League, played over the weekend at King’s Park Arena in Bweyogerere.

To make it to the final, Barbarians overcame Ba Guy, while Ba Musaayi Muto edged Horn Bills in the semifinals that were played earlier on the same day.

In the final, Nasimolo opened the scoring in the early stages of the contest before doubling his tally just three minutes later. The lively forward almost completed his hat trick moments later, but Ba Musaayi Muto goalkeeper Byamukama produced a fine save to deny Barbarians a third goal as they continued to press.

Ba Musaayi Muto had chances of their own as they tried to find a way back into the game, but Barbarians goalkeeper Esther O. was always alert. The side managed seven shots on goal, all of which were expertly dealt with, making it a frustrating evening for Ivan Otai, the season’s top scorer, who was kept quiet throughout the contest.

At the end of it all, it was Barbarians who took the day. Namilyango College Old Boys Association (NACOBA) Vice President John Paul Jingo, together with the interim chairman of the league Michael Mitti, handed over the championship trophy to Barbarians captain Andrew Hygie amid celebrations from teammates and fans.

“What a season we have had. Thanks to everyone who supported us. We are already looking forward to retaining the crown next season,” Hygie said.
League spokesperson Thomas Agaba stated that the season had been highly competitive and well organised, mainly because of the strong support from partners like Guinness, who added an extra layer of excitement to the league.

“This season has been one of the most competitive and well organised we have had so far. The growth we have seen gives us confidence that the Ngo League will only get better in the coming seasons,” Agaba said.

Throughout the season finale, just like during the entire campaign, Guinness elevated the matchday atmosphere from the first whistle to the final sip, with fans treated to a lively football and entertainment experience.

“We are excited to see the Ngo League end on such a high note. Alumni leagues are a big component of alumni reunions and Guinness is proudly associated with various leagues across the country,” said Mercy Atwongyeire, the Project Manager for Premium Beer at Uganda Breweries Limited.

Entertainment at the finale was headlined by hip hop superstar Navio, who performed fan favourites from his catalogue. DJ Sharon Shaz was also on the decks, alongside other acts, ensuring the season ended in style.

The Ngo League is expected to return around May next year for Season 6.
