Stanbic Black Pirates will have to fend off Betway Kobs challenge as they vie to retain the National Rugby Sevens Series title. The 2019 edition throws-off this Saturday as Roke 7s after Roke Telcom joined Guinness as co-sponsors for this year’s do.
Toyota Buffaloes will host the first circuit of the series this Saturday at Kyadondo Rugby Club with ten teams taking part. Black Pirates are the 7s title holders but a lot has changed since then.
Rejuvenated Hima Cement Heathens recently claimed the rugby premiership title. Betway Kobs also beat Pirates to the Uganda Cup title in late 2018. Last season, Black Pirates accumulated a record 151 points to emerge atop while runners up Betway Kobs had 139 points, just two above this weekend’s hosts Buffaloes.
Dusupay Warriors are also looked on as challengers but Pirates Captain Ivan Magomu believes they are the side to beat and are determined to defend the title.
Pirates lost less than five games during last season’s campaign and Magomu believes that they are still that team.
The next circuit (Budu 7s) will be played on June 1 in Masaka. Later Pirates will host the third circuit (Rujumba 7s) at Kings Park grounds in Bweyogerere.
