Stanbic Black Pirates delivered a statement performance to knock out Nondescripts RFC 20-17 in a tense Enterprise Cup semifinal held on Saturday, April 11 at Kings Park Arena in Kampala, booking a place in the final against Kenya’s Kabras Sugar RFC.
In a match that lived up to its billing, the Ugandan side showed resilience and composure to overcome the record Kenya Cup champions, with the contest finely balanced at 10-10 heading into halftime.
The Pirates returned from the break with renewed intensity, gradually taking control of the game. Scrum-half Conrad Wanyama proved decisive, crossing over for a crucial try that swung momentum in favour of the visitors.
Captain Frank Kidega led from the front, rallying his side in key moments, while the bench ultimately made the difference. Samuel Lubwama, Mubarak Wandera, and Pius Ojeabuu all made impactful contributions as the Pirates held their nerve to seal a famous 20-17 victory.
The result marks one of the club’s most significant wins in recent years, as they stunned one of Kenya’s most decorated sides to reach the final.
Meanwhile, in Kakamega, Kabras Sugar RFC continued their dominance in the competition with a hard-fought 29-20 victory over Menengai Oilers.
Despite a slow start that saw Oilers take an early 3-0 lead through Abutwalib Wesonga’s penalty, Kabras gradually asserted control. Tries from David Bunduki and Roy Maruti, both converted, helped the hosts build momentum before captain Eugene Sifuna powered over just before halftime to give Kabras a 21-10 lead at the break.
Kabras extended their advantage early in the second half through Griffin Chao, and a Jone Kubu penalty in the 64th minute stretched the score to 29-13.
Oilers attempted a late fightback, with Eric Ogutu scoring a consolation try after the hooter, but Kabras’ disciplined defence ensured they held on for the win.
The victory sends Kabras into yet another Enterprise Cup final, continuing their impressive run and setting up a highly anticipated showdown with a confident Black Pirates side.
The final is scheduled for April 30 in Nairobi, where Pirates will be looking to complete a fairytale run against the tournament’s most dominant force.
