Uganda boxing federation (UBF) clubs have expressed dissatisfaction to the federation after the postponement of the Intermediates championship. As the last event on the UBF calendar nears, several boxing clubs had intensified preparations for the championship that was due this month before it was postponed to early next year to create space for the national team (Bombers) Olympic trials.

Over 40 clubs were to take part in the week-long event earlier set for December 9-17 at Buganda Road Play ground. Four cubs has even staged trial championships to prepare their boxers including; Kololo, Cobap, Namungona and Sparks.

“We put in a lot to stage their trial championships to select the best boxers to represent us but now the intermediates are off. This is mainly due to crippled preparations for Olympics qualifiers by Uganda Olympic committee (UOC) and National council of sports (NCS). The postponement has affected us negatively both financially and psychologically,” noted one of the club directors to the four clubs. Kololo High School also organized their event on November 21 before Cobap (Lubya) on November 28 at Just Lyfe bar, Kalerwe.

Namungoona Boxing club under Coach Charles Semakalu held a successful friendly where over 20 bouts were on card as his boys were tried by boxers from UPDF.

Sparks Boxing club under Coach Kalungi Herbert also organised their boxing finest event –with the two-day event attracting a mammoth crowd at Luzira S.S playground.

Kids that were due to fight in intermediates championship had trials

The friendly matches that received support from Uganda Boxing Federation and UNAIDS saw the boxing fraternity go for HIV testing/counseling. Messages of hope as well as HIV awareness were delivered by HIV ambassador Moses Nsubuga, UN Women representative Lubulwa Timothy as well as AIC officials.

The UNAIDS partnership also coincided with the international World Aids Day celebrations. According to UBF, national team trials start with trials on December 14 before the medical examinations the following day.

Action starts on December 16-23 and then non residential camp on January 2-9 before the residential camp commences on January 14, 2020 after prior elimination event on January 11-12.
