Uganda U-23 men’s national football team (Kobs) will play their first game of the CECAFA U-23 Championship today, Sunday 18th July against DR Congo in a lunch time clash in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia.
The CECAFA U-23 Championship kicked off on Saturday, 17th July and will run up to July 31 with Uganda who are the record winners and title holders being top contenders to claim victory once again.
Ahead of their opener, Kobs Coach Morley Byekwaso is positive that his side will put in a good shift against DR Congo, though he doesn’t want to be complacent.
“Our training sessions have been good. There were lots of developmental things we saw. The players have been responding well and now we are good to go,” Byekwaso said.
“We respect Congolese so much because they are really talented and play good football in many aspects,” Byekwaso added.
Byekwaso further says that to breakdown their opponents, his side needs to be very aggressive and united to avoid setbacks but he believes that the pre-tournament preparations have put the players in good shape.
Kobs recently camped in Saudi Arabia ahead of the tournament, holding two friendly matches. They also went to Ethiopia earlier enough inorder to acclimatize to the conditions there.
Last year’s CECAFA edition wasn’t held due to Covid-19 disruptions.
Uganda won the 2019 event but it was an open tournament back then with no age restrictions but this year’s show piece will be payed by players who are below 23 years and a given number of overaged players.
The kick-off date for this year’s do was postponed by a fortnight due to Covid-19 disruptions and other league activities of some participants.
