Captain’s Bell Golf Tournament receives Absa boost

The 2021 Captain’s Bell Golf Tournament was launched today, Tuesday, 11th May at Uganda Golf Club’s (UGC) terrace by its anchor sponsor Absa Bank, Uganda and the club.

The event that will run between Thursday 20th May to Saturday 22nd May at UGC’s par-72 course in Kitante has received a 30 Million Shillings boost from the main sponsor, Absa.

The event will be played primarily to usher in new UGC Captain, Patrick Billy and his committee which comprises of his Vice Captain/Course Secretary – Dr Alex Coutinho, Treasurer – Patrick Kagoro and others.

“The tournament is expected to attract about 200 players. We also have professionals and they will play on Thursday (20th) and Friday (21st). The main event will be played on Saturday (22nd),” Ruth Ssali, the UGC Honorary Secretary who was representing Club Captain at the launch said adding that the pro kitty is 8 Million Shillings.

According to Billy’s missive read out by Ssali, the Captain says he is delighted to tee-off his tenure with Absa adding that he is looking forward to host players at the do.

Absa Bank Uganda Managing Director – Mumba Kalifungwa noted that their commitment to the event is a reminder of their strong bond with the club and its activities.

“Absa has been a long-term partner of UGC in driving growth and development of the game of golf in Uganda. We take great pride in having the opportunity to be on board for this tournament, which holds special significance to both UGC and Absa,” Kalifungwa said.

The mode of play is medal with players set to win prizes in the men’s and ladies groups including side bets. Seniors are also in the mix.

Other partners for the tournament are; Johnnie Walker, Pepsi and Wine To Be.

The previous event was held in 2019 with Colin Odere (41 points) and Peace Kabasweka (38 points) emerging overall winners in the men’s and women’s pools respectively.

In 2019, former UGC Captain Jackson Karyarugookwe dedicated the Captain’s Bell tournament to the then Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL) outgoing Managing Director (MD) Mark Ongom Ocitti, who was once Vice Captain of the club.
