The 2022 Captain’s Bell Golf Tournament has received a major sponsoship boost from Absa Bank Uganda in a deal worth UGX57.8M (Fifty Seven Million, Eight Hundred Thousand Shillings).
This development was confirmed on Thursday in a press briefing at Uganda Golf Club (UGC).
The tournament will run from 5th to 7th May at Uganda Golf Club’s par-72 golf course in Kitante, Kampala. Professionals will play two rounds (on 5th and 6th) whilst the main event (amateurs) will be held on Saturday, 7th.
The Captain’s Bell, held annually is played to usher in the new leadership of the club and this year it will be played to welcome new leadership led by incoming Captain Emmanuel Wamala who replaces outgoing Captain Patrick Billy and his committee.
Absa Bank who sponsored the previous edition have upped their package from last year’s UGX30M and the incoming Captain is grateful.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Absa Bank for coming on board as sponsors of this tournament. With their partnership, the game of golf will reach greater heights,” Wamala said adding that he expects a fun filled tournament.
Mumba Kalifungwa, Absa Bank Uganda’s Managing Director said that the tournament is an integral part of both UGC and the entire golfing fraternity as a whole.
“Over the years, we have enjoyed a mutually beneficial friendship with UGC and this is a testimony of how important the club and this tournament are to us,” Kalifungwa noted before appreciating the efforts of the outgoing Captain.
Paul Charles Rukundo who is the club’s Competitions Secretary revealed that professionals will be playing for a kitty of UGX10M, an upgrade from last year’s UGX8M. There are lots of prizes to be won by amateurs across various categories including side bets.
Rukundo added that during the main event, Absa staff who intend to learn about the game of birdies and boggies will be taken through basics (clinic) at no cost.
During the previous edition, Ronald Rugumayo won the professional event with a gross score of 139 after two rounds.
In the previous main event, Aggrey Mutaka was the men’s overall winner with 65 nett whilst Lin Li Xi emerged ladies’ overall winner with 60 nett.
