Uganda’s ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge League B match against Italy was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to persistent drizzle in Hong Kong. Both teams shared a point from the no-result game, as the match referee, Wendell Labrooy, called it off following an early lunch at 1:30 PM local time. Uganda remains at the top of the standings with 14 points.
With little time to lament the weather disruption, Uganda now turns its attention to a critical game against the hosts, Hong Kong-China, scheduled for 4:00 AM (EAT) tomorrow. Captain Riazat Ali Shah emphasized the importance of solid execution on the field to maintain their momentum in the tournament.
“This will be our third meeting this year, and we have each won one game apiece. This will be a series decider and finale. We will look at the playing surface and execute. The toss will be key,” said Captain Shah, projecting confidence.
Head coach Jackson Ogwang also urged his team to focus on making the most of the situation. “Unfortunately, we cannot control things like the weather. We will take the point from the Italy game and forge forward. We have now entered into the business end and have to make hay,” he remarked.
The team management will assess their playing options carefully, with veteran spinner Frank Nsubuga potentially returning to counter Hong Kong’s formidable left-handed batters. The hosts feature dangerous players such as Anshuman Rath, Babar Hayat, new skipper Yasim Murtaza, and tournament centurion Martin Coetzee.
Statistically, the two teams are evenly matched, having faced each other five times, resulting in two wins each and one no-result.
