Ugandan athletics icon Joshua Cheptegei delivered a commanding performance on Sunday, clinching top honours at the 2026 Barj2Barj Dubai Half Marathon in a fiercely contested race that showcased Africa’s long-distance dominance.
Cheptegei surged ahead in the dying moments of the race to clock 59 minutes and 26 seconds, narrowly defeating Kenya’s Nicolas Kipkorir, who finished just two seconds behind. Tanzania’s Alphonce Simbu followed closely, completing the podium with a time of 59:30 after an intense three-way contest that remained undecided until the final stretch.
The trio maintained a blistering pace throughout the race, running in close formation for most of the distance. Spectators were treated to a dramatic conclusion as the runners launched into an all-out sprint in the closing metres, with Cheptegei displaying superior finishing speed to seal the victory.
Following the race, Cheptegei expressed satisfaction with the result, describing it as a critical milestone in his ongoing transition from track events to road and marathon racing. The former world and Olympic champion noted that road competitions provide a unique challenge that demands both tactical awareness and sustained endurance.
He emphasised that the Dubai race served as a valuable benchmark as he builds towards future marathon competitions, highlighting his commitment to gradual progress and long-term goals in road racing.
Cheptegei’s continued success has also drawn praise from fellow athletes and coaches.
