Coronation Rugby Sevens Cup date confirmed

The 2019 Kabaka Coronation Rugby Sevens Cup has been confirmed for Saturday, July 20 with 12 male and four female teams respectively expected to partake in the competition at the Legends rugby grounds, Lugogo.

The outing will be hosted by Shell Rimula Rhinos and will serve as the fifth circuit of this year’s national 7s series sponsored by Roke Telkom and Guiness.

“We expect this to be a fun-filled outing under the theme: ‘sustaining environment and community’ as part of the commemoration activities held to celebrate the crowning of the Buganda (Kabaka) King, His Majesty Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II,” noted Rhinos Chairperson Alex Kalimugogo during the launch last Tuesday.

This year will mark Kabaka’s 26thcoronation anniversary and the Coronation 7s event will witness its second staging in the club category whilst schools event making three years.

St Mary’s College, Kisubi (SMACK) won this year’s schools category after a 25-10 win over Namilyango College last weekend in Kisubi during the final.

“It is good to see schools actively playing rugby especially in this event. It is also an opportunity for the youth to join the coronation celebrations,” Buganda’s Prince David Kintu Wassajja told the media.

Vivo Energy Assistant Brands Manager Rebecca Nassiwa revealed that fans are set to win goodies from challenges like predict and win plus packages for outstanding players.

Yayiro Kasasa, on behalf of organizers, revealed that all is set for the event which is sponsored by Vivo Energy Uganda (Shell Rimula), Guinness, Roke Telkom, Buganda Land Board, Majestic Brands, Events Warehouse, Fotogenix, Movit Products Limited, DHL Uganda, Guardian Pharmacy, Legends Bar and Restaurant and Pepsi.

Stanbic Black Pirates won last year’s edition after 17-05 win over Plascon Mongers in the final at Legends before going on to win the series.

Betway Kobs leads the 2019 national 7s standings with 91 points, six above second placed Pirates .
