As the Cricket Cranes prepare for the African Games in Ghana, they set their sights on the coveted top prize amidst stiff competition. This marks a historic moment as cricket makes its debut at the 13th African Games in Accra.
Uganda faces tough opponents in Group A, including South Africa, Kenya, and hosts Ghana. With only the top two teams from each group advancing to the semifinals, the pursuit of gold becomes even more intense.
The return of Cosmas Kyewuta from a back injury provides a boost to the squad, although the absence of Riazat Ali Shah, sidelined due to a similar injury sustained during the Sri Lanka Tour, is noted. Additionally, Jonathan Ssebanja and Innocent Mwebaze opt for rest, choosing to sit out the games.
Under the leadership of Brian Masaba, the Cricket Cranes embark on their quest for gold, with Jackson Ogwang assuming the role of interim Head Coach, supported by Craig Williams as the batting consultant for the tournament.
As men’s cricket starts at the African Games, Coach Jackson Ogwang stresses the importance of the event for the team’s readiness and the opportunity it presents for Uganda to etch its name in cricket history.
“The African Games is another great opportunity for the team to go out and play cricket against the best teams in Africa , its coming at a time where our World Cup preparations are intensifying and gives us another opportunity to go apply and execute what we have been working on after our two tours to the sub continent and also a chance to try and win Uganda it’s first cricket medal at the games,” Ogwang said.
In addition to competing for medals, teams will also vie for valuable T20I ranking points. Uganda, currently ranked 22nd globally, trails behind powerhouse nations like South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
The Cricket Cranes set off from Kampala on Friday morning, reaching Accra later that evening, ready to showcase their talent and determination on the African stage.
