Over the weekend, the Uganda men’s national cricket team, the Cricket Cranes, enjoyed a grand send-off dinner at the Mestil Hotel in Nsambya, ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which is just days away.
The event, titled ‘The Last Supper,’ provided the team an opportunity to unwind and celebrate with members of the cricket community, courtesy of their generous sponsors, Lyca Mobile.
Dressed in white tops and grey pants, the Cricket Cranes were joined by notable guests including the Minister of State for Sports, Peter Ogwang, members of the Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) board, the Victoria Pearls team, Lyca Mobile officials, and journalists.
“We are happy to be sent off in good spirits and to know that so many people are behind us and the game,” said team captain Brian Masaba. Reflecting on their recent training in Sri Lanka, he added, “We see the support from Lyca in a bigger perspective because it offers opportunities for the sport to grow, even in terms of infrastructure.”
Minister Ogwang emphasized the government’s commitment to cricket, announcing an increase in funding from Shs1.2 billion to Shs3 billion for the 2024/25 financial year. “Go and prove yourselves. Be disciplined, work hard, believe in God, and be respectful,” he advised the team.
The send-off dinner marked a significant milestone for the Cricket Cranes as they embark on their World Cup journey, buoyed by support from their sponsors, the government, and the Ugandan cricket community.
