Uganda’s hopes of qualifying for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup were dashed after a narrow nine-run loss to neighbors Tanzania in Match 6 of the Africa Qualifier at Takashinga Cricket Club in Harare.
Uganda, who won the toss and chose to bowl, looked in control early as they restricted Tanzania to 128/6 in 20 overs. Mukesh Maker anchored the Tanzanian innings with 45 runs off 32 balls, while Alpesh Ramjani (2/15) and Cosmas Kyewuta (2/42) delivered key breakthroughs for the Cricket Cranes.
Chasing a modest target, Uganda appeared on course for victory at 80/2 after 11 overs. However, a dramatic batting collapse saw them lose seven wickets for just 15 runs, eventually stuttering to 119/9. Young Tanzanian pacer Khalidy Juma produced a stunning spell of 4/13 that sealed Uganda’s fate.
Head coach Abhay Sharma admitted Uganda had themselves to blame: “Poor shot selection and lack of composure cost us dearly.” Skipper Riazat Ali Shah echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the team’s struggles against spin: “We failed to rotate the strike and that put us under pressure.”
Despite the disappointment, Uganda Cricket Association Chairman Jackson Kavuma urged calm and perspective. “This setback must not define our team. What is required now is a clear-eyed analysis of what transpired and a deliberate plan on how best to move forward. With unity, patience, and informed decision-making, we are confident that we will emerge stronger,” he said.
