In a season filled with surprises, newcomers GM Sugar and Mukono Warriors have emerged as the breakout stars of the Uganda Cricket Association’s Division Two League. Both sides, now promoted to Division One, will cap off their remarkable campaigns with a face-off in the Division Two Final this Sunday at the Entebbe Cricket Oval.
GM Sugar’s Seamless Debut
GM Sugar, competing in their first season, wasted no time making their mark. Topping Group B with clinical precision, they carried their form into the qualifiers with a statement victory over fellow debutants Kutchi Tigers B.
Kutchi, who had impressed as Group A leaders, set a modest target of 141 thanks to disciplined innings from Rohit Hirani (31) and Navin Pindoria (38). But GM Sugar’s disciplined bowling, anchored by Nimeshkumar and Hevin, kept the run rate in check.
Despite an early collapse in the chase, Rahulkumar Pravinbhai Patel stepped up under pressure. His unbeaten 58 off 44 balls guided GM Sugar to a five-wicket win in 25.3 overs, cementing their place in Division One.
Mukono Warriors: Resilience and Redemption
For the Mukono Warriors, the path was far from straightforward. Their first eliminator against Nile CC was twice postponed due to weather and poor pitch conditions. But when play resumed on September 7, the Warriors came out swinging.
After posting a competitive 171, it was Harsh Panchal who stole the spotlight with a sensational six-wicket haul. Nile CC crumbled to 64/9, handing Mukono a crushing 107-run victory.
Next came Kutchi Tigers B, eager to redeem themselves but still nursing wounds from their defeat to GM Sugar. Mukono’s batters, led by explosive knocks from Panchal (49 off 33) and Kalpesh Jeshani (29 off 16), surged to 195 in just 30.5 overs.
Kutchi’s reply was rocked early, slumping to 37/4. A fighting 86 from Navin Pindoria revived hope, but Mukono’s bowlers, particularly Hardik Donga and Mepani Rajesh, held firm to seal a narrow 12-run win and promotion to Division One.
Final Showdown: GM Sugar vs Mukono Warriors
With promotion secured, the spotlight now shifts to the Division Two Final this Sunday. While both sides were in Group B, and GM Sugar previously defeated Mukono Warriors by a commanding 118 runs, the final promises to be a different battle altogether.
GM Sugar enters as the methodical juggernaut—disciplined and unflinching. Mukono Warriors, meanwhile, are battle-hardened and unpredictable, having thrived in high-pressure scenarios throughout the playoffs.
The winner not only claims silverware but also enters Division One with undeniable momentum.
Around the League
In Division One, Kutchi Tigers Cricket Club were crowned champions for a second consecutive season, underlining their consistency and class. However, it was a tough year for Wanderers Cricket Club and Avengers Cricket Club, both of whom were relegated after struggling to keep pace in a fiercely competitive division.
