The Uganda men’s national tennis team is in the mix for the Davis Cup Group IV – Africa event in Congo Brazzaville running from 21 to 26 June 2021.

Uganda’s contingent comprises of; John Oduke (Captain), Simon Ayella, Boris Aguma, Frank Tayebwa and Edward Birungi and they left for the event on Sunday.

Uganda Christian University (UCU) Mass Communication student Edward Birungi will make his debut for Uganda at the tournament and he is eager to impress.

“I and my teammates are going to try to give it our level best in order to see that at least we are able to qualify and go to the next event come next year,” tournament debutant Birungi said.

“The Davis Cup is one of the biggest competitions in the game of tennis. Being able to make it to this level is surely an overwhelming moment,” Birungi added.

10 Countries are at the event, that is; Uganda, Namibia, Botswana, Angola, Congo (Group A), Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Gabon, Nigeria and Senegal (Group B).

Uganda lost out to Rwanda in the 2nd/3rd place playoffs in the 2019 edition, still played in Congo Brazzaville.

Teams are staying at the Grand Hotel De Kintele where movement is restricted to Courts and Hotel.

Venue for the tournament is Complex Sportif La Concorde De Kintele Brazzaville which hosted the 2011 All Africa Game.

Matches are played on hard court, using the Wilson US Open balls.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, there will be no spectators allowed and PCR testing conducted every two days at the site.

Team Uganda is supported by National Council of Sports and Uganda Olympic Committee
