The group stages of the UG20 2025 Men’s National League came to an electrifying close over the weekend, wrapping up weeks of intense cricketing action marked by dominant displays, unexpected rain delays, and standout performances that have defined this year’s competition. The final matches not only entertained but also confirmed the eight teams advancing to the much-anticipated knockout phase.
At the Jinja SS Oval, Tornado CC’s spirited batting effort, led by Conrad Lubwama’s fluent 62, was not enough to hold off JACC’s balanced response. Eddie Agaba’s composed 39 and Paul Mulongo’s quickfire 29 ensured JACC chased down the target with confidence, sealing a seven-wicket victory in 17.2 overs. The afternoon session, however, succumbed to rain, a recurring theme in the closing weekend.
In Entebbe, Tornado Bees displayed remarkable resilience against KC Budo. After the morning session was washed out, the Bees regrouped to post 112/7, thanks to steady knocks from David Musoke and Akbar Baig. KC Budo started brightly but fell apart under the pressure of Simon Ssesazi’s fiery spell and Aziz Tandia’s precision bowling, eventually folding for 97 to give Tornado Bees a hard-fought 15-run win.
Meanwhile, at the Serenity Oval in Kamengo, Ceylon Lions made a statement of intent with a commanding 226/1, powered by Hamu Kayondo’s magnificent 126 and Ronald Omara’s 74. When rain interrupted Patidar CC’s reply, Srihith Hambi and Lav Shah ensured the Lions’ dominance was complete, sharing nine wickets between them to secure a 157-run win under DLS rules.
Ismaili Community CC continued their strong form against Jinja SS CC, with Pervaiz Ali’s 77 setting up a competitive 137/8. Rain again intervened, revising Jinja’s target to 100 in 14 overs, but Junaid Khan and Nazim Punjwani dismantled the chase to hand Ismaili a comfortable win. The afternoon clash mirrored their dominance, as the same trio of bowlers kept Jinja in check and guided Ismaili to another convincing victory, solidifying their spot in the top eight.
Aboojo CC once again underlined their credentials as serious title contenders with a ruthless performance against Kutchi Tigers B. Joseph Baguma’s three-wicket burst restricted the Tigers to 73/6 before Pascal Murungi’s unbeaten 46 sealed a quick chase in just 6.3 overs. The second encounter saw Kutchi Tigers fight back valiantly, but Murungi’s explosive 50 off 27 balls, supported by Fortunate Alijuna’s 40, powered Aboojo to a six-wicket triumph that showcased their relentless form.
At GM Sugar Oval, the home side produced a weekend to remember. Bhaveshbhai Patel’s 72 off 37 balls set the tone for a 42-run morning win over Wanderers CC. The afternoon match, however, was pure spectacle. Mehulkumar Patel blazed an unbeaten 133 off 70 balls, smashing 15 fours and 8 sixes in a record-breaking innings. His unbroken 200-run stand with Bhavikkumar Patel lifted GM Sugar to 217/1. Despite gallant half-centuries from Abdul Basit Habib and Perry Wazombe, Wanderers fell short, bowled out for 153 and conceding a 64-run defeat.
With the dust settling on the group stages, the final standings were confirmed: GM Sugar topped Group A with 14 points, followed by Wanderers CC on 10. Aboojo CC led Group B on 13, edging out Rounders CC with 12. Kutchi Tigers CC dominated Group D with 16 points, while Ceylon Lions secured their place with 10. Joining them in the quarterfinals are Avengers CC and Ismaili Community CC, completing the top eight.
As the UG20 2025 League enters its knockout phase, anticipation is at fever pitch. GM Sugar’s explosive batting, Ceylon Lions’ run-scoring prowess, and Aboojo CC’s clinical consistency set the stage for thrilling clashes ahead. Defending champions Wanderers CC will aim to retain their crown amid rising challenges, while Avengers CC and Ismaili Community CC prepare to make their mark in a fiercely competitive field.
The group stage may be over, but the real battle begins now — where form, firepower, and nerve will determine who lifts the UG20 2025 trophy.
