SuperSport on DStv and GOtv presents the best football in the world, with cracking action from the Premier League, Ligue 1, La Liga and Serie A lighting up your screens from Tuesday 25 to Monday 31 August.
European football takes centre stage this week with a packed schedule across La Liga, the Premier League, Serie A and Ligue 1, as champions, contenders and ambitious challengers begin to shape the new season.
La Liga provides the biggest midweek headlines, with the postponed Matchday 1 fixtures for Spain’s “big three” finally taking place. Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid were given additional recovery and preparation time following Spain’s triumphant 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, meaning their opening fixtures were pushed back.
Real Madrid’s first game of the season is particularly intriguing as José Mourinho makes his long-awaited return to the Bernabéu. The Portuguese coach is back in charge after 13 years away, tasked with restoring Madrid to the summit after a trophyless previous campaign. His first competitive outing comes against Real Sociedad on Wednesday, before Madrid host Málaga on Sunday.
Barcelona, meanwhile, begin their title defence against Athletic on Thursday before hosting Rayo on Monday. Hansi Flick has overseen a successful first two seasons in charge and knows expectations remain enormous. “It could be that we’re missing something, we’ll see this week. There’s intensity and quality in training. I see the team raising its level and that’s the most important thing. We have to work hard to maintain the level of last season,” says Flick.
There is plenty more La Liga action, including Sevilla against Atletico, Real Sociedad versus Espanyol and Villarreal’s trip to Alavés.
Serie A also serves up a fascinating weekend. Juventus host Parma, Napoli welcome Como and Inter travel to Cagliari, while Roma face Lecce and Atalanta meet Bologna. Inter’s summer recruitment includes England international Djed Spence, who has moved from Tottenham after an impressive World Cup.
The wing-back said: “I was definitely drawn by the history. You only have to look behind us at all those trophies. This really is a massive club. It’s a big step for me and my family. I’m over the moon to be here.”
In Ligue 1, PSG face Lille before Monaco host Marseille in one of the weekend’s standout fixtures, while Lyon welcome Le Havre.
The Premier League delivers another heavyweight round. Manchester City travel to Crystal Palace, Liverpool host Nottingham Forest and Tottenham meet Newcastle. Chelsea face Brighton before Manchester United take on Ipswich, while the weekend concludes with Aston Villa hosting champions Arsenal.
Arsenal arrive with confidence after their emphatic Community Shield victory over Manchester City, but Mikel Arteta knows defending the title will be an enormous challenge. “We know that it is going to demand something special – and we are going to go for it. We know what it’s going to take, we know the difficulty of the task. That’s why we’ve never done it in the club, to win it again.”
With Mourinho’s Madrid comeback, Barcelona’s title defence, Inter’s new-look ambitions and Arsenal attempting to retain their crown, European football promises another compelling weekend.
