Uganda men’s national cricket team, Cricket Cranes had a false start to the International Cricket Council (ICC) Cricket World Cup (CWC) Challenge League B tournament as they lost by 63 runs to Jersey during the opening match of the event on Friday, 17th June at the Lugogo Cricket Oval in Kampala.
Jersey who were made to bat first after losing the toss posted 256 runs for six wickets from 50 overs while hosts Uganda managed 193 runs with all batsmen out at 45.2/50 overs.
Jersey’s opening batting pair of Harrison Carlyon (34) and man of the match Nick Greenwood (80) laid a blue print to their side’s victory after causing havoc to the Cranes bowlers very early in the game.
The above pair posted an opening score of 74 runs before second wicket of Greenwood and Josh Lawrenson (43) managing 97 runs.
Jersey who played all their 50 overs could have done more damage to the hosts but the latter fielded precisely in the final stages of the game to keep the visiting legion in check.
For the Cricket Cranes innings, Simon Ssesazi led his side’s chase posting 50 off 43 balls.
Ronak Patel was another stand out player posting 60 runs but albeit crossing the half century mark, Cricket Cranes who were all out before completing their overs were on the losing end during the tournament’s opener.
Albeit dropping points, Uganda still lead the table with 10 points, three ahead of second placed Hong Kong who are in action today.
Uganda returns to action on Monday and they will be up against Hong Kong at the Kyambogo University Oval.
The tournament is a pathway to the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup in India but most importantly a voyage that could end with Uganda securing the much-vaunted One-Day International (ODI) status.
