Focus shifts to Cape Town 7s

Uganda Sevens (men’s team) had a false outing in the opening circuit of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series held last week in Dubai (Dubai 7s) where they lost all their matches.

Albeit an impressive show by debutant Denis Etwau, the Tolbert Onyango coached side struggled against core sides and for now, it’s safe to say the learning curve continues.

The Cape Town 7s scheduled for 9-11th December is the last event Uganda Sevens will be participating in this season’s HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series for they are an invitational side, not a core team. However, they will most definitely seek to make the best of it ahead of the 2023 season.

The Cape Town Stadium, which recently hosted the Rugby World Cup Sevens 2022, will be the battleground for the top 16 men’s and 12 women’s sevens teams this coming weekend and the pools were drawn following the conclusion of the Emirates Dubai 7s 2022.

Uganda are in Pool D alongside USA, Great Britain as well as Series joint leaders and defending champions Australia.

Hosts South Africa are in Pool A alongside France, Fiji and Canada.

Pool B has Ireland, Samoa, Uruguay and Japan whilst Pool C is comprised of East African side Kenya, giants New Zealand, Argentina and Spain.

France 10-07 Uganda

Ireland 33-15 Uganda

Spain 26-05 Uganda

Fiji 29-14 Uganda

Uganda 00-29 Canada.
