From goals to saves: Otai and Akoj light up the Ngo League
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Ngo League roared back into action for Match Day 2 at Kings Park Arena, delivering a thrilling mix of football action. Backed by Guinness, the league also highlighted outstanding individual performances among the Old Boys of Namilyango College.

The day’s opening matches set the tone, with Dream Team and Ba Guy settling for a goalless draw, while Barbarians’ Ivan Otai stole the show early on, notching the season’s first hat trick in a 4-0 demolition of Butida. The defending champions also made a statement of intent, edging Titans 1-0 thanks to a composed finish by Fred Sekweyama.

AFewGoodMen wasted no time asserting themselves as Sam Galiwango scored what could be the fastest goal of the season, a swift strike straight from kickoff, which proved enough to seal a 1-0 win over Leviathans.

While the goals may have slightly dipped compared to Match Day 1 (32 compared to 44), Match Day 2 made up for it with tighter contests and thrilling moments. The average winning margin was trimmed to just 1.2 goals, underlining how finely balanced the teams are becoming as the league progresses.

Standout performances were abundant, but none brighter than Ivan Otai. With four goals from eight shots on target, the Barbarians forward not only ended the day as top scorer but also as the overall top performer. He now leads the goal-scoring charts with 6 goals – three more than his closest rival.

Defensively, the goalkeepers were equally in the spotlight. Esther Akoj of Ba Guy put on a masterclass between the posts, racking up 12 saves and 4 clearances, keeping her team’s record of not conceding a goal intact through four games. She now shares the lead for most clean sheets (4) with Nathan of AFewGoodMen.

In off-the-pitch highlights, Match Day 2 was proudly hosted by the double champions Los Bandidos and supported by St Joseph’s Hospital Wakiso and Mengo Blood Bank, who ran a medical camp offering free sickle cell testing, blood donation services, general blood tests, and eye checkups.

The Hornbills also took the opportunity to unveil their new kit to much fanfare.

In true Guinness fashion, the atmosphere was high-energy off the pitch, with the iconic black and gold brand continuing to stamp its legacy on the beautiful game.

Speaking at the match day, Guinness Brand Manager Denise P. Nazzinda reiterated the brand’s deep roots in football culture.

“Football is part of Guinness’ DNA. It’s bold, it’s passionate, and it brings people together. Our commitment to this league and to supporting communities like the Old Boys of Namilyango goes beyond the pitch and will continue to grow for years to come.”

Match Day 3 kicks off on July 31st, promising even more drama, goals, and heart.
