The draws for the second edition of The FUFA Drum tournament were held on Tuesday at Jevine Hotel, Rubaga in Kampala. FUFA was represented by President Eng. Moses Magogo, 1st Vice President Justus Mugisha, organizing committee chairman Rogers Byamukama, FUFA CEO Edgar Watson, Executive members and the tournament’s committee members.
The respective Provinces were also well represented by team leaders and officials. Byamukama admitted that they had not rewarded last year champions Buganda province with their cash prize (Shs30m) because they are yet to receive the money from the sponsors. “Yes, we are yet to clear the prize money for Buganda province but shall do so before kickoff I believe. We are waiting for money from our sponsors that include government. It is not only Buganda, even the match officials are yet to received their allowances,” noted Byamukama during the review meeting of the previous and inaugural edition which preceded the 2019 draws. “This edition we return bigger and better with player insurance well catered for by the National Insurance Corporation (NIC),” he added. The playing format has been changed this year; after the first group stages, the teams will be grouped to play at one venue for the quarter finals till the finals. In his address, Magogo lauded all the parties for their roles in ensuring a successful tournament during the first edition. “I am very glad that we have the second edition of the FUFA Drum tournament. I must admit we had challenges in the first edition, but we shall only get better. We have a new format in place. This is meant to give sponsors mileage. This tournament causes a lot of emotions and this is good for the event. Let us enjoy the tournament and encourage our fans to take part. Three provinces Acholi, Tooro and West Nile stood out in terms of mobilisation. I also thank the cultural leaders who took part in the first edition,” noted Magogo before congratulating the inaugural winners. The much anticipated 2019 edition meant to celebrate ancestry through provinces, will kick off on the March 30-31 weekend with eight fixtures lined up as champions Buganda open their title defense against Lango at home.
