Golfers from across the country are currently competing in the 2024 Palm Valley Golf & Country Club Independence tournament, which teed off this Wednesday at the exclusive nine-hole course in Akright Housing Estate.
The event, which has drawn overwhelming interest, has seen participants from top clubs such as Mary Louise Simkins Golf Club, Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort & Spa, Uganda Golf Club, and Entebbe Golf Club.
Palm Valley’s course is renowned for its unique layout, standing out from other golfing venues in Uganda. Its signature long par-4 opener challenges players with a water hazard, followed by a tricky par-3 second hole. The third hole, another par-4, demands precision. Elevated greens across the course mean that competitors will need to bring their best chip-and-putt skills to post competitive scores.
One of the standout competitors to watch is Michael Monne, who has the home advantage as his residence is near the course. Monne will tee off first at 7 a.m., going up against Sean Kinsella, the powerful Andrew Baguma, and national team player Elton Thembo.
The most daunting holes on the course are the par-5s on the fifth and sixth, placed side by side. The fifth stretches out over 506 yards, while the sixth is a lengthy 600 yards. Players will need to strategize their tee shots carefully to avoid the out-of-bounds on the left of both holes, while also accounting for pin placement on the elevated greens.
The afternoon session will begin at midday, with prominent golfers such as John Muchiri, Isaac Mariera, Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka, and MP Xavier Kyooma, among others, scheduled to play. Rukia Nalwoga is also one of the notable ladies competing.
Prizes will be awarded to the top two golfers in each category: groups A, B, and C for men and A and B for the ladies. There will also be side bets for nearest to the pin and longest drive, offering additional chances for competitors to shine.
The festivities will culminate with the much-anticipated 19th hole celebration, starting at 7 p.m., with Club Captain Edward Okech promising a spectacular event to cap off the day.
